Continuing the Journey of Success After Solstice

According to research, there are 3 primary factors that will increase the likelihood of positive, long-term success following discharge from residential treatment programs.

These factors are:

• Parental involvement in the treatment process
• The stability and structure of the discharge environment
• The utilization of aftercare support after discharge

The foundation for much of what is emphasized at Solstice East is based on these 3 factors. Long term, positive outcomes are our primary objective, and in order provide for these, Solstice East has implemented an aftercare program as part of our residential treatment center experience. 

When students return home after completing their journey at Solstice East, the positive changes that they made during their time can only be maintained with the continued support of the entire family. The transition home is an exciting and joyful time for families, however, specific preparations and structures must be in place in order for this transition to go smoothly. 

Our goal is to provide families the support that they need to help them during the transition process back to the home environment. We want to offer girls and their families continued treatment, such as depression and anxiety treatment, in order to allow a smoother transition back home.

Principles of Aftercare

The goal of aftercare is to provide the most cost-effective, research-based aftercare support options to assist families and graduates with the transition into life after Solstice. The following principles guide our aftercare program implementation.


Families are educated about the important role of good aftercare in greater long-term success following treatment. Both parents and residents participate in a variety of learning experiences which are relative to the transition. This is done throughout the treatment process to increase understanding and preparation for this vital time.


Families are assisted in the process of building support systems and teamwork within the Solstice system and beyond within their family and home system. Families will be encouraged to seek the direction, expertise and counsel from their Solstice therapist and referring professional (where appropriate) as they begin to implement aftercare principles and programs.


As families invest in the process of treatment, such as depression and anxiety treatment, and prepare for aftercare, they are encouraged to utilize new skills and processes in developing the support necessary for the long-term success of their daughter and family. The process often requires new ways of thinking, acting and collaborating, which will require creativity on both the parent and student’s behalf as well as an open mind to new ideas.

Preparation for Home Starts Day One of the Solstice Journey

Preparation for aftercare will begin immediately upon admission. Everything we do from the first day on campus until the day they graduate and transition home is aimed at long-term success.

Upon admission, families will receive the following:

  • A book entitled, Not By Chance: How Parents Boost Their Teens Success In and After Treatment, by Tim Thayne, Ph.D. This is the beginning of the education about the treatment process and preparation for transition.
  • An outline of the aftercare program components to help families recognize how important aftercare is in the overall treatment process, as well as the steps to take in this process.
  • Information about dates for the family seminars which we encourage all families to attend. These seminars include further education and face-to-face transition groups that aid in preparation for the transition process.
