Residential Programs For Troubled Youth

Residential programs for troubled youth are facilities where teens who have struggled in the past with a range of behavioral and emotional challenges receive the therapeutic and psychiatric support they need to start on a path towards healing. Solstice East is widely recognized as one of the leading residential programs for troubled youth in the country.residential programs for troubled youth

At Solstice East, we do not consider our students to be “troubled”- they have merely strayed away from a path of success. Our goal is to help young women get back on the right track and restore their relationship with family members.

Located just outside of Asheville, North Carolina, Solstice East helps teen girls ages 14-18 achieve lasting success in their emotional, social, and academic lives. Our program specializes in helping young women who have struggled in the past with trauma and the emotional effects of trauma such as depression, anxiety, and disordered eating.

Our talented and passionate therapeutic staff members go through extensive trauma-focused training in order to thoroughly address the challenges our students struggle with. Our strong emphasis on family therapy, cutting edge academics, psychiatric services, and equine therapy helps create a supportive environment for girls to grow and heal.

Here are a few things that set us apart from other residential programs for troubled youth:

    • Girls-Only: Our gender specific program allows us to address the unique aspects of the challenges girls face. Programming at Solstice East is specifically designed to help girls in this specific age group and gender.
    • Addressing the whole individual: At Solstice East, we utilize a holistic approach to therapy. Instead of focusing on one “problem area” we help girls heal as individuals. We get to the root of the issue rather than trying to treat one or two symptoms of the challenge.
    • Family-Centered Approach: One of the most important parts of your daughter’s healing journey is reconnecting and repairing the family dynamic. We involve families in every step of the therapeutic process. Our family focused programming includes regularly scheduled family therapy sessions, family seminars, and family visits to campus.
    • Focusing on Internal Change, Not Compliance: Unlike other residential programs for troubled youth, Solstice East focuses on helping girls change from the inside-out. Rather than focusing on compliance and a system of rewards/punishments, we help girls develop positive values such as accountability, respect, responsibility, and love. From these values, girls begin to change their own lives and “comply”.
    • Hero’s Journey: At Solstice East, we utilize the archetypal Hero’s Journey to help students through their healing journey. We use it as a metaphor for the therapeutic process and help girls establish goals based on the journey. Learn more here>>

Help For Girls Struggling With Trauma

Solstice East utilizes the most recent neurological research to help girls struggling with trauma. Over the years, the word “trauma” has been associated with deeply catastrophic event such as car accidents, abuse, and natural disasters.

At Solstice East, we refer to those traumas as “Big T Traumas”. Recently, research has proven that trauma can create an impact on an individual’s brain no matter the size of the trauma. This means that there are traumas individuals experience in their daily lives that can be just as impactful as “Big T Traumas”. These traumas, which we call “little t traumas” can range from bullying to growing up with a learning disability.

Our program addresses trauma through a variety of techniques known to help students cope with trauma. These include:

  • EMDR
  • Neurofeedback
  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
  • Trauma-Focused Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (TF-EAP)
  • gender-specific addictions treatment

Of absolute greatest importance, however, are the relationships that she builds while at Solstice East. We have found that these relationships are essential to helping your daughter heal from her trauma and build a strong and empowered identity. This greater understanding of what heals and helps girls recover from trauma is one of the many aspects that separates us from other traditional trauma treatment centers.

Academic Programming at Solstice East

At Solstice East, many of our students struggle in school because they are unmotivated or have attention and learning style challenges. Academic challenges are often one of the first things parents notice as a point of concern for their child. We help teens who have excelled in school but have recently been performing poorly as well as teens who have struggled to succeed throughout their life.

Our academic approach is specifically designed to help young women achieve success where they are in the academic process. Academic programming at Solstice East is highly individualized. The small class sizes and support students experience can positively influence their ability to restore academic standing and go onto happier, brighter futures.

Academic programming at Solstice East includes:

  • Small class sizes: At Solstice East, class sizes are kept intentionally small in order to provide the most individualized learning experience possible. Our average class size is around 6 students.
  • Shorter terms: Our academic program operates year-round, offering five 10-week terms in which students can earn a full quarter-credit in each class. These shorter terms and flexible scheduling can help students to catch up academically.
  • Integrating academics and therapy: By fully integrating our clinical and academic programming, students are able to make academic and therapeutic gains. Our experience in treatment has shown us those teens that start to succeed academically experience a great boost in their motivation in other areas of their lives. Students begin to feel good about themselves again by experiencing an increase in self-confidence and self-efficacy, which in turn has a very positive impact on their clinical progress and family relationships.
  • Assistance for Learning Styles: Each student has an Individualized Academic Plan. This plan shows the student’s academic goals and objectives The document is one that the team, teachers, parents, therapist, and student, can access to help to clarify what strengths and challenges and action plans within the classroom. Students who need additional support with academic and organizational skills can receive tutoring within the school day as well as one-on-one tutorial sessions.
