“School, therapy, homelife, and extracurricular activities are often thought of as separate things. At Solstice East they are brought together under our unique treatment model to offer a holistic change for our students.”
After teaching in the public school system for years, Bryan Tomes, Solstice East’s Academic Director, started looking for a new way to breathe life into his passion for education. He found this in Residential Treatment. No longer did his involvement in positively influencing the lives of his students end at the close of the school day.
What makes a residential school environment different?
Bryan’s day is filled with parent contact multiple times a week, helping instructors nurture an active, participatory school culture, and helping to build an environment that creates academic advocacy and accountability in the students.
“The lessons we teach may not always be remembered, but the skillset will ensure each one of our girls benefits from every educational environment they encounter for the rest of their lives. A small class size and a personally tailored education not only helps girls achieve success in the short run, but sets them up to succeed in school, professional environments, and personal relationships for a lifetime.”
How is this change created?
As a girl starts at Solstice East each student meets with Bryan or their team teacher to determine an individual academic plan. This ensures she is on track to meet graduation requirements and build a solid foundation for college. Solstice offers ACT and SAT prep courses, individualized tutoring, and confidence building 1:8classroom ratio. As a fully accredited school Solstice East does not rely on packet work or online course instruction.
“At Solstice Teachers are not overwhelmed with large classes and tight schedules. Teachers have manageable class sizes, and a chance to connect with every girl they teach. We communicate with the Residential Team, Clinical Team, and other instructors to ensure girls are supported in every step along the way. If a girl is struggling in one aspect of her program we can come together as a team and give her a level of support that is hard to offer in any other environment.”
“Working at Solstice provides an educator like me a unique opportunity to impact students beyond the classroom. For our girls Solstice is a chance for girls to finally find success in every aspect of their life. We are not just a school, our teachers are not just educators, each one of us are are part of a family building positive futures.”
